WHAT DOES ARLEN SPECTER'S DEFECTION FROM THE REPUBLICAN PARTY MEAN FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY?

I'm not sure what to think of Arlen Specter's defection from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party. I do know that as a Democrat, that respects labor unions and upward mobility for the poor and Middle Class, Arlen Specter's positions are sometimes troubling.

I was talking to my 82 year old Republican friend (who voted for President Obama) about the future of the Republican Party. She is not happy with the Party. An Independent, my friend only switched to the Republican Party some years ago because she was upset with the Democrats, was nostalgic about the Party of Lincoln and she is pro-life.

That said, she still voted mostly Democratic in the last election. She was particularly outraged at the negative mail and corrupt voting practices conducted by the Republican Party in her city and county (Rensselaer County - upstate New York). By the way, she is thrilled that Scott Murphy won the congressional seat (20th district).

Anyway, back to Specter and what could cause a schism in the Democratic Party. With more and more moderate Republicans coming over to the Democratic side, I fear that some of the progressive positions that Democrats take, will be suddenly cast by the wayside. This will cause a major schism within the Party. The major Parties may start evolving into something akin to Great Britain's Parties.

I predict that eventually the schism will bring about another Party to be aptly named, "The Democratic Progressive Party" or simply "The Progressive Party".

The make-up of "The Democratic Progressive Party" will be unions, young, west-coast, parts of the east-coast, pro-choice, anti-war, those who want equality and justice for all, those who want economic and political reform; want gun control (esp. a ban on assault weapons), restoration of civil liberties, education and health care reformers, environmentalists, those who believe in a "GREEN" economy, and those remaining on the far left.

The traditional Democratic Party will morph into those who are Independents, those who lean more center-right and some center-left. The traditional Democratic Party will lose labor to the Democratic Progressives 1. Because labor (the unions) have been consistently ignored by traditional Democrats 2. If EFCA is defeated under the Obama administration they will become disillusioned with the traditional Democrats 3. Unions will be an essential part in moving towards a "Green" economy.

What that means in terms of winning elections? I have no idea.

BAILOUT BANKS STILL OUTSOURCING JOBS

If this doesn't make you sick and outraged, I don't know what else will.
-
Excerpt from: "Bailing On US Workers" by John Aidan Byrne
-
"US banks that have taken billions of dollars in taxpayer bailouts are still shipping thousands of jobs overseas.

Earlier this month, Bank of New York Mellon, which received $3 billion in TARP funds, opened its third call center in Pune, India, where it now employs 1,300 people.

Doug Brown, who wrote "The Black Book of Outsourcing," said Bank of America, with $52.5 billion of TARP funds in the kitty, has expanded its India-based payroll to 5 percent of its 301,000 employees in 2009, about 15,000 people.

The moves, which have outraged unions, are 100 percent legal. Congress didn't put into the TARP law any restrictions on shipping jobs overseas.

Citigroup, which got $50 billion in TARP funds plus $300 billion in government guarantees, plowed ahead with a program last fall to add as many as 1,000 call-center employees in the Philippines -- weeks after it got its first round of taxpayer relief.

Representatives for Citigroup and Bank of New York Mellon declined to comment on their outsourcing arrangements. A Bank of America spokesman said the firm has not announced any facility openings outside the US since last year."

DRUNK ERIE PA COP VIDEO: NAACP URGES TAKE ACTION NOW

Follow my blog with bloglovin´

Take a look at this video of a Pennsylvania police officer joking about a just-murdered man... and mocking the man's grieving mother. "We're looking at it like, 'One less drug dealer to deal with,'" the Erie, PA, police officer says. "Cool."

The murder victim, described as a loving father, had no history of drug violations, according to news reports.Would you trust this policeman to protect you and your community? I wouldn't.

Too many police officers still have attitudes like this toward the communities they are patrolling, highlighting the problems we still need to address: ending racial profiling, the high rate of unsolved murders in African American communities, police brutality and other forms of unequal justice for African Americans and Latinos.

Working with the NAACP, you can help change this situation:
-

-
These bills are designed to curb outrages like the New Year's Day shooting of unarmed Oscar Grant by transit police in Oakland; the police shooting of Robert Tolan on his front lawn in Bellaire, Texas; and the questionable death of high school football player Billie Joe Johnson, killed in what was described as a "routine traffic stop" in Lucedale, Mississippi.

NAACP branches are grappling with each of these cases. The Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act also includes provisions to assist local law enforcement agencies in doing more effective screening of candidates for law enforcement jobs before they are given the power to use deadly force and then during in-service reviews. It also supports the creation of local police accountability and review boards with subpoena power, independent investigatory power, and staffing and other resources needed to provide local community oversight of their law enforcement officers.

While most police officers are courageous public servants, continued police abuses are harming our communities and eroding the trust needed to both prevent and solve crimes.

The one thing that concerns me is that we must not allow one race to dominate and control the flow of goods or seize control of the assets and prosperity to the detriment of people of all colors in the Western Hemisphere. Also, we must have participation from the bottom up and not the top down "trickle down". All people must participate in prosperity and there must be emphasis on labor as well as business. -

PRESIDENT OBAMAS DECISION NOT TO PROSECUTE THOSE WHO TORTURED

The President’s release of memos detailing torture or what was deemed, at the time, “so-called” acceptable forms of torture, mean nothing because most of the techniques were exposed years ago. So any talk that remains, is, should those who violated U.S. statutory law be prosecuted? The President has made his decision and he is wrong.
-
We must not forget that the President is a politician and an intelligence outsider. He has made his decision so as not to alienate the intelligence community and I fear, to appease those right-wingers who hold fast to some false notion that torture is lawful under certain (or any) circumstances. He also clearly doesn’t want Cheney or Mr. Bush (especially Bush) to answer for their deeds. I’m going to ask you to read the following and make an informed decision regarding prosecution of those who authorized torture and those who performed it.

Love what "Bono Vox" said in his comments 4/22/2009, at the above link: [READ]
"A state-sanctioned torture policy is about as un-American as you can get. Washington wouldn't torture, even though the Brits were torturing thousands (including boys) on ships docked off Brooklyn. Lincoln wouldn't torture, even though his life was endangered. FRD didn't institutionalize torture, and Ike didn't have torture as his policy in the field, even though the free world was at risk. So Chuck Todd not only has the will of the people wrong, he doesn't understand the historic magnitude of what the Bushies did under our flag. Todd's ignorance is despicable.
-
After the horrors of WW II, Americans took a hard look at what made us different than the Nazis and the Russians. One of the big AUTHENTIC differences (not just lofty ideology) is that we don't torture. Thousands of German soldiers at the end of the war scrambled to surrender to us and not the Russians because the Russians would torture and kill, while we wouldn't. Torture isn't a minor issue. Frankly, I think it's a lot more important than the economy, as this defines who we are as a nation wheres the economy is cyclical in nature. Do we really want to be on the Hitler-Stalin-Pol Pot side of the torture issue?"

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY: A PARTY ENGAGED IN TREASONOUS BEHAVIOR OR JUST A PARTY OF "NO IDEAS", RADICALS AND INSTIGATORS?

-
The REPUBLICAN PARTY is still the Party of "NO"; the Party of CHENEY; the Party of RUSH; the Party of PALIN; the Party of BACHMANN; the Party of Rick Perry; and now the Party of "TEA", and where it has sunk (where it began with Nixon), the right-wing Party of Racists, radicals and dangerous people.

I could name a lot more "racist" or “dementedright-wing Republicans, but I don't want to spend my entire afternoon on Wikipedia and "Fixed" News (that's right, I said "Fixed"). I was going to name Bill O'Reilly ... but I really don't need him or his goons showing up at my door.

The Republican Party (whose current leadership is almost largely right-wing) was just about buried after the 2008 election.* What was never buried was the racist, hate-filled, conspiracy driven Republican playbook that was documented in Robert Parry’s February 25, 2009 article, “The GOP’s Anti-Obama Propaganda” (which I posted here on March 1, 2009)

Now racist people are in both the Republican and Democratic Party; however, one need only look at the Party membership to see that the Republican Party lacks diversity and inclusion. That kind of representation was ever prominent during the 2008 Republican campaign and convention.

After the election of President Obama, gun and ammunition sales exploded, and “hate-groups” went from 602 in year 2000 to 926 in 2008.**

Though the number of Republican Party members has dwindled, let us not take that group for granted.

Let’s fast forward to the “Tea Parties” and observe the context of those rallies. Very few if any people of color were at the “Tea Parties”.

There were radical, irrational rantings and signs about “socialism” [code for welfare] and President Obama’s citizenship [code for Muslim terrorist].

Since the President fulfilled his campaign promise to lower taxes for 95% of Americans, the Tea Party idea was always extremely suspect; and we need only look at the people pushing these “Tea parties” to see that it comes from the conservative right-wing who always vote Republican.

Further, we saw racist depictions of President Obama (on the Republican side) both before and after the election.

Rick Perry and other "so-called" prominent Texans want to secede from the United States which is absurd; and unlike “Armadillo Joe” who thinks we should let Texas secede; do we really want a bunch of radicals to go unchecked within our own borders? http://broadwaycarl.blogspot.com/2009/04/racism.html

The Case Against Shell: Landmark Human Rights Trial

-
--

-
The multinational corporation Shell, financed, armed, and otherwise colluded with the Nigerian military forces that used deadly force and conducted massive, brutal raids against the Ogoni people of the Niger Delta. Shell was also involved in a strategy that resulted in the executions of nine Ogoni leaders who were working for environmental justice and human rights, including internationally-acclaimed writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, EarthRights International and other human rights attorneys sued Shell for their role in the repression of the Ogoni and the executions of the “Ogoni Nine”.

The case will go to trial on May 26th, 2009 in New York City.

The film was produced by Rikshaw Films for EarthRights International and the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Special thanks to filmmaker Glenn Ellis, for extensive footage from two important documentaries made by Catma Films, The Drilling Fields (1994) & Delta Force (1995), and to photographer Ed Kashi, for use of his photographs.
-

Shell must be held accountable. As Ken Saro-Wiwa's son, Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr. has said about the upcoming trial against Shell, "We need to have people account for their role in the executions and the displacement of the Ogoni people, many of whom feel traumatized. It will be a relief. It will enable people to face the future. That's the most important thing. Let's account for the past, so we can move forward."

BUSH POLICIES CONTINUE UNDER THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

It is evident that the Obama Administration has chosen the FDR model as a way to deal with the economy. I have no problem with that. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration has made some very poor policy choices.

Let's tackle the banks first. The bank bailout was done to unfreeze the credit market. No problem with that; however, some of the bailout money was given to banks who clearly did not need it [see March 24, 2009 post] and those banks appear to have not sufficiently done their part in unfreezing the credit market; and, in addition, are continuing to support bonuses for doing a poor job [calling them retention bonuses).

The Obama Administration has done nothing to threaten and punish bailout banks that are now actively and negatively trying to influence legislation surrounding the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). This is a government "of the people, by the people" ...; and not a government of the corporations.
-
-
-

Another Criticism: Why bailout banks and continue subsidizing big farms and food corporations, and not subsidize batteries for hybrid cars before conceivably laying off upwards of millions of auto employees and jeopardizing businesses and their employees who supply parts to auto makers?
-
-
-
This information could be wrong, but I just read that "A number of big national banks stand accused of systematically bilking black and Latino borrowers. And the administration of our first black president is siding with the banks.

At the end of April, the Obama administration will go before the US Supreme Court to argue that those banks—including bailout recipients Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, and JPMorgan Chase—should be allowed to duck a state investigation into their lending practices. If that sounds like the politics of the past, it is. The Obama administration has opted to maintain the stance of the Bush administration—one opposed by the NAACP and other major civil rights groups. And it won't be some Bush holdover making the arguments in Cuomo v. The Clearing House Association (an industry group whose membership includes the world's largest banks).

Instead, the banks will be defended by the office of Obama's new solicitor general, former Harvard Law School dean Elena Kagan." Article by Stephanie Mencimer in Mother Jones.

From democracynow.org

The Obama administration has decided to continue a Bush administration policy of invoking “state secrets” to dismiss a lawsuit accusing a Boeing subsidiary of helping the CIA secretly transport prisoners to torture chambers overseas. On Monday, a San Francisco appeals court heard arguments on the American Civil Liberties Union’s attempt to reinstate the case against Jeppesen International Trip Planning on behalf of five former prisoners. The lawsuit accused Jeppesen of arranging at least seventy flights since 2001 as part of the CIA’s extraordinary rendition program. The Bush administration successfully won the case’s dismissal on the grounds it would risk exposing “state secrets.” On Monday, Obama administration lawyers told judges the government’s stance is unchanged. ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said, “The] Justice Department stood up in court today and said that it would continue the Bush policy of invoking state secrets to hide the reprehensible history of torture, rendition and the most grievous human rights violations committed by the American government. This is not change. This is definitely more of the same.”"
